A man, most likely of Indian decent, holds a flower bouquet in Rangoon.
Indians have migrated to Burma (Myanmar) for hundreds of years, but the biggest influx was instigated by the British colonial rule which had thousands of Indian soldiers and government officials transfered to Burma (Myanmar). With them followed traders and laborers. In the past, ties between Burmese and Burmese Indians have been strained. In early days, fuelled by the unfair privilieges once bestowed upon the Indians by the colonial British rule and later nationalist Burmese have targeted Indians – most evident when the military take-over forced up to 300,000 Indians to leave the country.
Today, most etchnic Indians regard themselves as Burmese rather than Indian.
