Soldiers exit a truck near Sule Pagoda and the adjacent City Hall to block advancing protesters. The place is of terrifying symbolic importance to both the regime and protesters as is was here most of the killings in the 1988 uprising took place.
When the monks came to road blocks they would start a simple chant and soon thousands of followers would chant with them:
“Let everyone be free from harm.
Let everyone be free from anger.
Let everyone be free from hardship.”
It is not known how many people wore killed during the crackdown. A UN special envoy said after a brief visit that he could confirm at least 31. Exile media and local dissidents say the victims should be counted in the hundreds.
