Burma is immensely rich in resources, but the proceeds from the sale of e.g. timber, gems and oil and gas only make their way into the pockets of a tiny elite of high-ranking officer and their business cronies. The generals have moved to a new capital and left Rangoon to its own devices.

Recently the Junta has started a massive privatization of state enterprises. Critics suspect it is to heed calls from ASEAN and the international community for reforms. But in reality, it is a reinforcement of the status quo, the assets are being sold either to businessmen allied with the military or to retired officers, who buy them with money amassed through years of accepting bribes.
