Karen Farmer Shot by Burmese Soldiers_
Saw Maung Pwe lost his eye when a Burmese government army patrol spotted him in his fields and started shooting at him from a distance. One bullet entered the back of his skull and took away his eye as it exited – another went through his shoulder. Miraculously he managed to crawl to safety in some nearby bushes, where the soldiers left him for dead.
He fled to E Tu Hta with his six children afterwards, but the urge to tend to his family’s cardamom and betel nut fields brought him and his oldest son back:
“I told my son to be careful, since there were soldiers all over, but they saw him and chased him down a mountain side. Later, friends of his took a picture of his dead body. His teeth were all broken and his head smashed. We just wanted to take care of our fields, but the soldiers beat him to death.”
