Brigadier General Khin Yee at a press meeting broadcast on one of the state channels – there are no private channels in Burma.
The general is head of police (Generals are heads of most ministeries in the country as well) and known as a hardliner as well as more corrupt than most other senior officials. In February 2010 he brought 50 trucks of riot police when he went to ”negotiate” between textile workers on strike and their employer.
There are two state-run channels in Myanmar. The evening news is most often a resume of what good deeds the generals have done lately; what school openings they have attended, how much money they donated to which temple, what new construction projects are in progress and so forth. The news is never a set length. The newscaster reads from her paper and if the generals have been busy, it will be a long show.
