A hand of a dead body is seen among branches and leaves close to the riverbed of the river Pyapon. Villagers in this part of the delta reported the deadly storm wave to be upwards of two meters high. Many villagers survived the hour-long brunt of the storm by holding on to trees or tying themselves and their children to buildings. But when the storm passed and the winds on the back of the cyclone shifted direction it pushed the water out to sea again in a violent tidal surge of tsnamic proportions. The surge wave took tens of thousands of people, and whole villages, with it back to sea.
