Over the past 40 years, over 650 rhinos have been shot by poachers after its horn for the black market trade in animal parts for traditional Chinese medicine. It’s sparked a war, with armed park guards out on daily patrols—guards who have been given permission to shoot poachers on sight, the only place in India that allows this.

Dusk patrols on foot are the most dangerous since rhinos have poor eyesight, and this time of day often charge anything that moves. Each year, guards are wounded and sometimes killed by animal attacks while on patrol.
