Illegal immigrants from nearby Bangladesh have flooded across the border into Assam in recent years - and many have settled near Kaziranga in small villages that abut the park, with their cows, water buffalo and goats grazing sometimes side-by-side with rhinos or deer. Many of the same devastating illnesses can infect all of these hoofed animals, diseases like brucellosis and hoof and mouth disease, so wildlife managers have begun vaccinating villagers' livestock to prevent a disaster.
