This guard was attacked by a rhino while out on patrol. He was hospitalized for three months and nearly died of his wounds. It's a poorly paid and dangerous job - both because of heavily-armed poachers that often outgun the guards who carry antique British-issue rifles - and because of the animals that live in the park: elephants, rhinos, tigers, cobras, wild boar, etc. Each year, guards are wounded and sometimes killed by animal attacks while on patrol.

Here, he has been setting fire to the tall elephant grasses at the end of the dry season, a measure used to keep deciduous forest from overtaking the grasslands that feed rhinos, elephants, deer and other hoofed animal species that abound in the park.
