In the immensely overpopulated capital of Haiti life and death are intimately intertwined. On a narrow street named after the famous soccer player Pelé in the rund down Cité de Soleil neighborhood the carpenter Jura Decius puts the final touches on a coffin to be delivered. Of Haiti’s 9 million inhabitants approximately half is under 20 years of age. The life expectancy is 53 years for men and 56 for women. Compared to developed countries where the corresponding ages are 79 for men and 83 for women. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. The living conditions, with an unemployment around 70% and a totally inadequate healthcare system makes death physically present and a natural part of everyday life.
