"THE BURDEN OF LEAD: WEST DALLAS FEELS IGNORED AFTER YEARS OF DESPAIR"
David Shanks led his horse Luther carrying his granddaughter, Derrionna "DeeDee" Shanks, 6, along Vilbig and Muncie Avenues near the location of the old lead smelter in West Dallas. Mr. Shanks was raised in the neighborhood and still keeps his horses on the property and attends church in a building where higher than acceptable levels of lead were found in the soil recently. People who lived in the modest homes along Muncie Avenue and those still living there say a lead company and company store was located across the railroad tracks from their homes. And despite an EPA clean up of the superfund site, lead levels continue to be higher than acceptable, but the people living in the area have yet to receive help or compensation.
