Here, a tigress leads her three 14-month-old cubs out through a hole in the fence at Bandhavgarh National Park to feed on local livestock. Certain parts of the park lack adequate prey. Park officials used elephants to break down parts of the fence so this mother would be able to feed her large litter—and they compensate villagers for cattle or buffalo losses within 48 hours. Fence or no fence, tigers frequently move in and out of the park, sometimes with disastrous consequences. Last year, three people from one village were killed by tigers--and two of those tigers were removed from the park and placed in captivity.
