A forest guard displays pugmark tracings—an inaccurate, widely-discounted method used to census tigers in India. A country-wide camera trap census in India in 2008 showed that officials had exaggerated tiger numbers by two-thirds. Though many park staff still use this method in their daily activities, camera traps are also now being widely used to count and identify tigers.
