A Christian man hands fruit up to a Muslim woman as she and hundreds of others make a long journey out of the country with little food to eat and most of their belongings left behind. As they fled, anti-Muslim fighters often looted and burned their homes. “It’s as if nothing ever existed,” said Oumar, a widow with hollow eyes and a bony frame who was fleeing the violence. “I was born here; I grew up here,” she said. “But because we are Muslim, they want us to go.” Most don't have any ties to neighboring Cameroon, and will live in growing refugee camps there.
