"DOREEN"

Doreen is 13 years old and was born with a disability. Her legs are deformed and she is unable to walk. She lives in a small village in northern Uganda with her mother, father and five younger siblings. The mud-built huts of the village have no running water, no drainage and no electricity. The family is poor and survives by rearing poultry and growing a few crops. Doreen gets around the village by crawling, but her school lies so far away that she is pushed there in a wheelchair. One day her wheelchair broke, and consequently she had to stay home from school for a year until she could get another one. She did try to crawl the nearly two kilometers to school, but gave up after a few days. Attending school has opened new worlds for Doreen. Apart from learning to read and do arithmetic, she has developed socially — she is no longer as shy as before, says her teacher. Doreen's greatest dream is to finish school and start training as a nurse. She was deeply impressed by the nurses that came to the school a while back to vaccinate the children. Doreen's teacher believes she will be able to finish primary school, but it is less certain whether her wheelchair can endure the bumpy roads back and forth from school. The family has a hard time coping with even the smallest repairs or the cost of maintenance.
