Sea ice forms in Wilhelmina Bay in the late fall. Humpback whales do not like sea ice, and will begin their 16,000 mile migrations north when the bays are full of ice. In an intricate web, the wildlife of the western Antarctic Peninsula is tied to the formation of sea ice and the seasons. From the Amundsen sea to the Antarctic Peninsula, climate change is altering the glacial ice, sea ice, and the oceans; changing the timing of seasonal events, and effecting the wildlife in ways that we do not yet fully grasp.
