In driving snow, scientists wait to retrieve a tag placed on a humpback whale the day before. The tag emits an audible signal only while the whale is at the surface, which the scientists track with a hand held antennae. The team hangs near the whale in order not to lose sight of the tag in the ocean or the sea ice, once it lifts off the whale. These sophisticated digital tags record the dive profiles and acoustics of a humpback, to paint a portrait of its feeding and foraging behavior.
