In rough seas, Autosub3 is hoisted back aboard the Nathaniel B. Palmer. The AUV completed 6 successful mission under Pine Island ice shelf, but almost didn’t make it back after ascending into a crevasse under the ice shelf on its 4th mission. Autosub2, it’s predecessor, never returned from a mission under another ice shelf in 2005, and the data it collected was lost forever.
