"UNDER A NUCLEAR CLOUD"
SEMEY, KAZAKHSTAN, FEBRUARY 24 Mayra Zhumageldina massages her 16-year-old daughter, Zhannoor at night before bed in their home in Semey, Kazakhstan Feb. 24, 2009. Zhannoor, 16, was born with microcephalia and sixth-degree scoleosis - a twisted spine - because of exposure to high levels of radiation. The defect harmed Zhannoor's brain development as if she were in a permanent vegetative state. She cannot think, speak or perform basic functions. Mayra cannot work and is reluctant to leave the house because she is afraid to leave her daughters side.
