"UNDER A NUCLEAR CLOUD"
CHAGAN, KAZAKHSTAN, FEBRURARY 27 Starlight lights up the abandoned military town of Chagan, next to the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Polygon in Kazakhstan Feb. 27, 2009. The city was once a military airbase during the Cold War, with planes ready to drop nuclear payloads. Over 400 nuclear weapons were tested in the site near the city, exposing over a million people living nearby to radiation that would lead to countless health problems. It was abandoned after nuclear tests ended following the fall of the Soviet Union, leaving a ghost town in the middle of the steppe.
