"Lost Dreams in Tuokou"

Yuan River has been driving the economic and cultural development of east Hunan area over thousands of years, Tuokou Ancient Town is located in the south of Hongjiang City, Hunan province, about 28km from the downtown. Dueing Ming and Qing dynasties, there were 15 wharves here. On market days, passenger ships shuttled around, bringing a great prosperity. Tuokou Ancient Town is a honored as "Small Nanjing in Hunan" due to the wide Yuan River where Qingshui River joins with Qushui and the prosperous scene of "nine streets and eighteen lanes, one wharf for each lane" as the distributing centre of materials like timbers and Tung Oil since Ming and Qing Dynasties. Since 1980s, highway and railway have been developing by leaps and bounds, while water transportation keeps declining. The ancient riverside street, grand ancestral halls, imposing cellar housing are lucky to escape from destruction and well preserved. As a result, the ancient production and living manners as well as river-related cultures are passed down from generation to generation.
