April 4, 2013. In the days following the ousting of Central African Republic President Francois Bozize, Seleka rebels quickly tightened their grip on the capital city Bangui. Rebels looted shops and homes and spread chaos through the capital. Different rebel factions competed violently for territory. Rebels kept streaming into the city to share in the spoils - their leaders seemingly powerless to control them. This detainee lies in a cell with his hands and feet tied up behind him. His Seleka captors claimed he was a thief who had stolen 3 mobile phones. He was crying and bleeding. The photographer intervened to have the man untied, but his fate remains unknown. Bangui, CAR.
