May 25, 2013. A group of San youth chat outside the building where they live on the controversial former South African military base in Schmidtsdrift, in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The San (often referred to as Bushmen) are indigenous to Southern Africa. They are widely discriminated against and are seen as a "Backward" race by many fellow Africans. During the 1970's several hundred San men from Angola, Botswana and Namibia were coerced to join the Apartheid army - their expert tracking skills and knowledge of the bush made them sought after soldiers. When Apartheid fell many of these San were afraid to return home. They were allowed to settle with their families on the base in Schmidstdrift. Despite many years of bitter land claims, legal battles and sometimes violent evictions, a small group of San still remain on the base, refusing to leave.
