In December 1996, Vinicio and
his eldest son, Juan (pictured), returned to
Matamoros to bring the entire family into the U.S. They drove their van
across the border in Brownsville, Texas late at night, and managed to remain
undetected at a second border station as well. After this, they traveled to
Florida, where they found seasonal work picking strawberries.
