Two women standing on the shore of Lake Urmia, a salt lake in West Azerbaijan Province. It is a popular destination as its salts and mineral rich muds are considered to have healing properties especially for skin and rheumatic afflictions. Studies have revealed that the lake's size has fluctuated over time largely due to the impact of periods of drought and flooding. Currently the lake is rapidly shrinking due to drought but also from the impact of dams built on some of the rivers that feed the lake.
