"Hidden Minority: South Africa's White Poor"

Apartheid subjugated millions while guaranteeing jobs for a comparative handful of poor whites. Some are unable to find sympathy for a group of people who benefited from that oppression. But many of my subjects were children when apartheid ended. They are not to blame for its injustice. By photographing this topic, I hope to tear away the easy stereotypes of a deep and intractable plight. I want to surprise the viewers of my work into seeing all poverty, regardless of race, with new and less jaded eyes.

These children live in huts, trailers and cobbled-together shanties outside a major city in South Africa. Maxine, (not her real name), is at center. Her parents are addicted to methamphetamine, "tik" as it is know in South Africa.
