The yearly monsoon rains provide much needed respite from the tropical heat, and bring life-sustaining water for crops and livestock. But some of the standing water left behind also provides a breeding ground for disease-bearing mosquitoes. As a result, in the humid aftermath of the monsoon, infection and mortality rates increase. Paradoxically, the intensity of the rain adversely affects mosquito reproduction. Too much rain will disturb the standing water enough to reduce hatching rates, but then they can increase again as the water levels go down.
