People who were forced to relocate by the Zimbabwean government during operation Murambatsvina in 2005 returned to Harare. They squatted on a piece of land in the outskirts of the densely populated Beveldear West. With operation Murambatsvina, Zimbabwean leader Mugabe wanted to return people to rural areas by destroying urban markets and homes, arbitrarily arresting market vendors and locking up street children to clean up what he called “a chaotic state of affairs”. Almost one million people were affected by this operation.
