Mounting Concerns #1
Environment: The reservoir behind the Three Gorges Dam floods an area of about 1,084 sq km, or about 1.5 times the size of Singapore. One key worry is that the reservoir will trap a large amount of flotsam and garbage that will choke up the waterways and eventually the dam itself. The government responded by mobilising thousands of fishing boats, such as this one, with dedicated "flotsam crews" to clear up the waters. [Oct 05 2006]
