Forward Operating Base (FOB) Goode, outside the city of Gardez in Paktia Province, is bathed in a thunderstorm rolling over the mountains. Communications towers and other surveillance assets are clearly visible. This FOB will be the 1-506th battalion’s headquarters for the duration of the deployment. Due to the scheduled conclusion of Operation Enduring Freedom, the unit would go on to decommission the base as their final mission roughly 6 months after they arrived in Afghanistan.
