Friends grieve over the body of Herron Hastings, 23, at the visitation on July 27, 2014. Hastings was shot and killed outside an East Side nightclub. The poverty rate in the Eastside Promise Zone is 35.03 percent with a higher violent crime rate compared to the city's rate. The area was given two Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grants to improve crime in the area.
