"In honor of you"
In the image: shukhuti's villagers making the 16 kilograms ball for the game. The ball is made with water, sand and wine.
Every Easter Sunday, in a small town east of Georgia, Shukhuti, its citizens are preparing to celebrate the event of the year, an event that is marked by memories and love of those who passed to better life. Lelo it's called, a no-holds-barred combination of wrestling and rugby. With this ancient game, one day a year, Shukhuti remember their deceased in a special way. Victory not only means beat your opponent, be the winner. Victory is a tribute to those who are no longer with them. The ball is given as an offering to a deceased villager and placing it on his grave after the match. It's their way to express respect and honor. Lelo is a sport, and a tradition, but most of all it’s about passion, strength, faith and devotion.
Images show the passion, strength and fight of this traditional georgian game. Show the effort, vitality and feeling with which the villagers live this day and this event.
