A five-foot wide section of the Shell Albian Sands tailings pond is seen on September 27th, 2010, near Fort McKay, Alberta. A 2008 study by Environmental Defence indicated that some Oil Sands tailings ponds were leaking as much as 11million litres of toxic waste into surrounding rivers everyday.
