Ryan checks his handgun before leaving his home to buy cigarettes, in Gary, Indiana. As a matter of course, many in Gary carry handguns for personal protection. There has been a spate of murders in Gary late in the summer. Ryan was recently let go in a round of layoffs from his job and is struggling to maintain mortgage payments on the home he purchased from his grandmother.
