Smith's mother said she and her family like living next to the theater because of its "'50s nostalgia. Some might complain about the noise, but it's happy noise." Decades ago, outdoor movie houses flourished in the U.S.— 4,000 of them in 1959. But as land prices went up, aging owners sold their screens to make way for shopping malls and housing developments.
