Cathedral Spires, Black Hills, South Dakota. Granite towers rise towards the heavens in the formation known as Cathedral Spires. The Black Hills rise four thousand feet above the Great Plains and are home to many of the most spiritual sites in Lakota (Sioux) traditions. The 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty guaranteed the Black Hills for the Lakota, but the treaty was broken after General Custer announced the discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874.
