Interoceanica: Connecting the Amazon to the Andes
The Interoceanic Highway connects the Atlantic ports and markets of Brazil with the Pacific ports of Peru. A key connection to Asian markets. Over 30 years in the making, the final stretch, to be finished in 2011, rises from the Amazon Basin to the high Andes near Cusco in Peru. Peruvians are wary of the easy access will afford to their neighbor, the economic colossus of South America. Many fear that Brazilian influence will alter their way of life, consume their resources and threaten their sovereignty.
