Street kids congregate to share guitar riffs and rats at the "Dirty Kid Camp:" a haven for train hoppers, hobos, and teenage runaways. (From left: Dharma, Grace, Sicka, Josh and Rat, Neklo)
In the center is Grace, an ex-heroine addict who was rejected by her family and friends just because she is an ex-addict and is no longer able to relate to her parents, cousins and friends who are all addicted. "Everyone I know does heroine. Been hooked since I was 13. But I've seen so too people die. If there's one thing I hate it's heroine. I hate it viscerally." she says.
Every summer hundreds of runaway vagabond teenagers and youth make their way to the National Rainbow Gathering, an annual festival which takes place during the weeks surrounding the 4th of July weekend in a different national park in America. In 2009 the Rainbow Gathering was held in New Mexico. Most of the youth, who are known at the gathering as "The Dirty Kids" travel around the country during the rest of the year.
