"Rural California's New Hard Times"
The economic crisis hit rural California hard, spawning poverty on a scale unseen since the Dust Bowl. "There's a lot of hurting people out here," said Naomi Vasquez, a laid-off Wal-Mart clerk. She and Manuel Martinez, an idled construction worker, try to escape the Central Valley's 100-degree heat in the shade of their sweltering shanty in Fresno's Taco Flat.
