Copeland, a star player, collapsed and died on the field during a game in 1989. It was coach Paul Knox's first year at Dorsey. "It was the worst day of my life," Knox said. "Not a day goes by when I don't think of it. It's safe to say what happened to Kevin changed the way I look at things. I discovered there's a lot more to life than winning football games."
