Camels walk in the desert in between Dubai and neighboring Oman. Camels are cultural icons, as they were once the only way to travel through the desert as they can carry huge weights and their bodies store enough water for longer trips. Now that developers construct apartments with twice as many bathrooms as bedrooms and sprinkler systems irrigate golf courses with water that often evaporates before it even reaches the ground, the underground aquifers that used to hold enough water for men and animals are running dry.
