"Cell Check" A U.S. Army guard checks on detainees in solitary
confinement cells at the Camp Cropper detention center September 20, 2007 in
Baghdad, Iraq. The special housing unit at Cropper has almost 100 solitary
cells, and it houses such detainees as those accused of violence against
guards, those who need protection from other inmates and some who need
quarrantine for infectious diseases. Prison rules state that a detainee can
only be held in solitary for a maximum of 30 days. The U.S. military had a
total of some 25,000 detainees in custody in Iraq, accused of attacks against
American and Iraqi forces as well criminal acts.
