"Common Ground" Former Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir
Bhutto meet December 4, 2007 in Islamabad, Pakistan in their first and only
meeting in Pakistan since they both returned from eight years in exile. The
formerly bitter rivals met for hours trying to find common ground to
challenge the rule of President Pervez Musharraf, who had declared martial
law. Earlier in the day, a court had barred Sharif from running in scheduled
elections, and three weeks later Bhutto was assassinated, throwing
Pakististan's political system even deeper into the abyss.
