in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The firing of the chief justice two weeks earlier by
President Pervez Musharraf was considered by many observers the event that
turned most Pakistanis against the president. The sacking also united the
country's legal community, and they protested the rest of 2007 for the
re-establishment of an independent judiciary.
