Latisha Silva and her three children must move from their Rhode Island apartment when their landlord is foreclosed upon. The family goes without hot water for three months when the landlord stops paying the gas bill. When the youngest becomes lead poisoned, the landlord demands a signed document waiving any legal action before he will return their deposit. Seven-year-old Isaiah, who is autistic, tries on his Halloween costume before a neighborhood party.
