A Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
contractor uses heavy machinery to tear down the last remaining structure at
the site of the former Master Metals lead smelter on the northeast side of
Detroit, Michigan. The worker at left sprays water on the demolition to keep
airborne dust down. Workers on the site wore suits, gas masks, eye
protection, gloves and helmets to protect themselves against exposure to lead
and other hazardous materials at the site across the street from the
Sojourner Truth Housing Complex. The company was contracted by the Michigan
Department of Environmental Quality.
