"Lead's Dangerous Legacy"

1 of 10

The former Master Metals lead smelter site on the east side of Detroit was never cleaned up until newspaper articles pointed out the dangerous site, which is just across the street from a public housing project and elementary school.

The state of Michigan's industrial past is poisoning its children today. Looming in backyards, on windowsills and at former smelter sites, lead is getting into children's blood and bones, permanently damaging their ability to learn and develop. The poorest people are most affected as their lead-tainted, inner-city homes fall apart around them and crumbling industries leave their dangers behind. Doctors and politicians are working to knock down the problem but thousands of children continue to be harmed by they lead the eat and breath every day.
