El Chapin kisses his pregnant wife Maira in Guatemala
City, Oct. 1, 2003. Released from prison one week earlier, he said "You
don't believe that we can have a normal life. But we have a kid, we are
waiting for another one, we love our families." With Honduras and El
Salvador outlawing street gangs, neighboring Guatemala is struggling to deal
with increasing crime and homicides. Many of the gangs originally started in
cities like Los Angeles, but they were transplanted to Central America along
with gang members deported for crimes committed in the United States.
