"Afghanistan's Worsening Hunger Crisis"
15 month old Wahidullah, from Logar province, suffering from the condition known as Kwashiorkor, a severe form of malnutrition, has his bloated stomach drained of fluid as at the Indira Gandhi Children Hospital on September 21, 2013 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition which is due to a deficiency in dietary protein. The extreme lack of protein causes an osmotic imbalance in the gastro-intestinal system causing swelling of the gut diagnosed as an edema or retention of water.
