"WE WERE PENN STATE"
Mourners gather around piles of signs, bouquets of flowers and other items left by fans at what became a make-shift memorial for Joe Paterno, the former Penn State football coach who died earlier in the morning, outside Beaver Stadium on the campus of Penn State on January 22, 2012 in State College, Pennsylvania. Once a rallying point for support of the late coach, the statue become a focus point for critics of the school and its football program since Paterno's firing in 2011. In July 2012, following former FBI Director Louis Freeh's investigation on behalf of the school's board of trustees, his 267-page report, asserted that late Paterno and three top officials buried allegations against Sandusky, his retired defensive coordinator, more than a decade ago to protect the university's image.
